Thunder Bay Winery, owned and operated by the Sahr family, launched its Alpena tasting room in 2012, after planting their vineyard in 2005. Originally from downstate Michigan, the Sahr family turned their hobby and interest in making wine into a full-fledged business.
Located in the Center Building, the winery and tasting room have a quaint, small-town feel, serving as the heart of the downtown area. “I enjoy how businesses act as a family and work together here in the downtown area,” says Sahr.
The best part about owning and running a winery, according to Jeremy Sahr, is the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people who share the same passion. In fact, Michigan is one of the top grape-growing states, which has helped Sahr build a thriving community around his winery.
One of Thunder Bay’s most popular wine is the sweet and smooth “Devils River,” a light-bodied sweet red. Sahr’s favorite is the port-style “Harbor Apena,” aged in bourbon barrels. During this time of year, the spiced mulled wine, featuring cherry and apple flavors, is also a customer favorite.
Thunder Bay is actively involved in the local community, participating in many events and donating to various local causes. The winery’s annual Harvest Festival has been a long tradition since the vineyard first opened. The festival fills the street, and features live music, outdoor tastings, and even grape-stomping for attendees.
The tasting room inside The Center Building, in downtown Alpena, is a great stop for a wine tasting gathering with friends; enjoy the added bonus of their experienced staff.
