The Center Building has been a signature gathering place in Downtown Alpena since its construction as the Hanover Block in 1903.
When this grand department store first opened its doors—one of the largest in the state at the time—it quickly earned the cheerful nickname “The Daylight Store,” thanks to its enormous windows that poured sunshine into every corner.
Since 1997, the current owners have been lovingly bringing the Center Building back to life. Year after year, they have restored its historic character while cultivating a vibrant mix of fresh, distinctive businesses—creating a place where old-world charm and modern energy come together beautifully.

2nd Floor
The 2nd floor is dedicated to professional office space. It currently houses the law firm of Wenzel Bennet & Harris, Ascension/Compassus Home Health Care, and Alpena Therapeutic Center. It has a secluded, quieter atmosphere than the first floor but is still conveniently accessible to the first floor and downtown amenities via two wide, carpeted staircases and an elevator.
There is a large hallway with seating areas plus two restrooms on the 2nd floor.
This space includes two large private offices (or conference rooms).
There are three (3) smaller offices/work areas, a reception area, kitchenette, plus a file room and/or copy room with built-in counters. It has both a front entrance and rear entrance, and was recarpeted and painted in 2020 with neutral tones and high tin ceilings for an open-loft feeling. There are two storage closets.
