The Center Building has been a signature gathering place in Downtown Alpena since its construction as the Hanover Block in 1903.
When this grand department store first opened its doors—one of the largest in the state at the time—it quickly earned the cheerful nickname “The Daylight Store,” thanks to its enormous windows that poured sunshine into every corner.
Since 1997, the current owners have been lovingly bringing the Center Building back to life. 1st Floor- Description
The 1st Floor of the Center Building is a popular gathering space with a large central hallway/lobby that connects Second Avenue at the front of the building to the pedestrian alley, Pocket Park and a parking area directly outside the back door of the building. The focus of the 1st floor is food and beverage as well as related retail and social events. The large central hallway currently serves as common area which could also be available for service of food and beverage and/or observation of kitchen/cooking.
This space opens onto the main lobby area at the rear of the building and directly across from the kitchen.
Casual, industrial/urban vibe with exposed historic brick wall, original hardwood floors, tin ceiling with glossy black finish and caged metal lights. There are large windows throughout and the back windows could be converted to open up direct access to a patio, Pocket Park and a pedestrian alley. There’s a large walk-in cooler (or storage room). This space is a prime location for a tasting room, a speakeasy, a restaurant, or any food or beverage-related retail venture, even a small event center.
