The Center Building has been a signature gathering place in Downtown Alpena since its construction as the Hanover Block in 1903.

When this grand department store first opened its doors—one of the largest in the state at the time—it quickly earned the cheerful nickname “The Daylight Store,” thanks to its enormous windows that poured sunshine into every corner.

Since 1997, the current owners have been lovingly bringing the Center Building back to life. Year after year, they have restored its historic character while cultivating a vibrant mix of fresh, distinctive businesses—creating a place where old-world charm and modern energy come together beautifully.

1st Floor- Description

The 1st Floor of the Center Building is a popular gathering space with a large central hallway/lobby that connects Second Avenue at the front of the building to the pedestrian alley, Pocket Park and a parking area directly outside the back door of the building. The focus of the 1st floor is food and beverage as well as related retail and social events. The large central hallway currently serves as common area which could also be available for service of food and beverage and/or observation of kitchen/cooking.

This space boasts a large, fully equipped kitchen which includes a main kitchen with a cooking area under a hood, plus a prep kitchen with a pick-up window, dishwashing area, make-up area and two mini-split AC units.

There are tiled floors, large exterior windows showing the central hall for observation. There’s additional storage available in the lower level if desired for inventory, catering supplies and equipment plus built-in shelving and room for additional refrigeration and pantry area, as well as office area.
