Lower Level I

The Center Building has been a signature gathering place in Downtown Alpena since its construction as the Hanover Block in 1903.

When this grand department store first opened its doors—one of the largest in the state at the time—it quickly earned the cheerful nickname “The Daylight Store,” thanks to its enormous windows that poured sunshine into every corner.

Since 1997, the current owners have been lovingly bringing the Center Building back to life. Year after year, they have restored its historic character while cultivating a vibrant mix of fresh, distinctive businesses—creating a place where old-world charm and modern energy come together beautifully.

Currently, there’s a chance for new businesses to become part of the thriving Center Building family—and to add their own story to this beloved community landmark.

Lower Level I

A few steps down from the main lobby, this level included a community conference room and 2 private office suites ( L-8 and L-9) plus a private bathroom. It is more private but still easily accessed by stairs or elevator. There are tin ceilings in the lower level with recessed lighting for a more intimate atmosphere.

This large conference room is furnished with conference tables and chairs that are adaptable to either classroom or horseshoe style.

It seats approx. 25 people. Leases include six uses per year at no charge plus additional use at a discounted price. The space is available to the community to rent for meetings, small workshops or projects. Food and beverage can be delivered to the room or a small buffet set up outside the room.
